Gregory P. Doe
was born in 1945 to Catherine (Katie) and Thomas (Tommy) Doe Jr., the third of three sons, in Dearborn MI. From an early age Greg had an interest in aviation, and it likely was part of his DNA since his grandfather, a West Point graduate, was the first president of Eastern Air Transport (later Eastern Airlines). Greg’s father was a 1928 silver medalist in the Second Winter Olympics and an employee of Vickers Hydraulics in aircraft sales. He was part of a team that installed a hydraulic hoist on a helicopter towards the end of WWII and was the first person to be lifted by a winch-equipped helicopter. Tommy Doe’s aircraft log book included 13 hours in a Vultee BT-13.

Around the age of 8 or 9 Greg’s modeling began in earnest with 1/2A control line flying, which led to larger .29 and .35 size models. Youth membership in the AMA came in 1958. In 1959 Greg started RC with rudder only, single channel 1/2A escapement-actuated airplanes. By 1964 Greg had advanced to multi-channel reed flyers. In the mid to late 1960s pylon racing was in its infancy, and Greg was smitten. After a couple of local races Greg flew in his first Nats in 1969. This event was held in Phildelphia and the model was a Rivets. The airplane crashed due to radio failure (EK Logictrol disease). Not to be deterred he continued to pursue his pylon passion (vice) for the next 50+ years.
