Tom Scott
is a well-known member of the Greater Cincinnati Radio Control Club (GCRCC) as well as a first class and highly respected competitor in both the international and national pylon racing community.

Tom grew up on the East Coast during the early years of Model Aviation. As a young man Tom and his father, “Bob”, spent many afternoons at the flying field. During the 1960’s Tom watched his father set a world speed record. Forty years after his father set a record, Tom himself set a national speed record for Pylon Racing. Fresh out of high school in 1969 Tom moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and started his working career at World Engines, during this time he became a member of the Greater Cincinnati Radio Control Club. Tom has been a member of GCRCC longer than any other member of the club today. From that first day on, Tom has unselfishly offered his time and money to help other members of the club. Whether it be ordering pins for the Flying Circus Show, or building and painting a 25 foot wingspan Pteranodon, Tom has always been the guy who flew below the radar and did anything he possibly could to help the club and the community. Tom can never say “NO”, as one club member said,

He has helped me and others countless times by lending his time, talents and generous access to his home and Scott Models for building advice, manufacturing parts and painting. If any of us call with a complicated problem, Tom will say "bring it by the shop and we'll hook you up!” Of course, when we try to pay him for paint or parts he says "don't worry about it".

Another staple of the Flying Circus Show is the space shuttle. Tom was instrumental in the development of a model to carry the shuttle to flying altitude in the early years and later, to help completely re-manufacture a new composite shuttle.

Tom began racing pylon locally in the late 1980’s and this has become his primary focus ever since. Tom has become a staple in the pylon racing community. His talents have led him into producing some the most competitive and affordable composite pylon racers available today. With Tom’s background in pattern making and producing prototypes for major industry leaders he was able to create some of the most beautiful models around. He created CMAD as a company to import composite racers from Asia at a reasonable price. Often, he would have to pay for models in advance. He would inventory and distribute kits from his office and it looked like a hobby shop rather than an office. Through his connections in F3D he was able to secure another source of composite models from Australia and is still providing racing planes to the masses today. Tom has served as the CD for the annual Moonshot event held at the GCRCC field every year, where competitors travel from around the US to compete and support the GCRCC crew.

His continued contribution to model aviation doesn’t end there. Tom is one of the biggest supporters of the AMA’s Cliff and Nancy Telford Scholarship fund. Starting in 2008 Tom, lead the charge to help fund the Scholarship Foundation. He understood the importance of being able to help our younger members and fully embraced the vision and passion of the Telford family. A raffle was initially the primary focus for raising money where many of the prizes were either paid for by Tom or donations he had solicited. However, this proved to be difficult to manage beyond the 10-year mark. At this point he switched gears, and through persistent encouragement he continued to raise money for the foundation. To date, Tom has raised over $45,000 on behalf of the NMPRA and an additional $60,000 for the fund as a result of hard work and determination to make the fund self-sufficient.

In addition to Tom’s support of the Telford fund he also creates and donates trophies for local and national pylon events. He manufactured and maintained the pylon scoring system used at the US Nationals for several years. In addition to this Tom has manufactured additional pylon scoring systems (mimicking the US Nationals equipment) used by many of the clubs around the US. All at the cost of material and will not accept money for his time.

Some of Tom’s Pylon racing accomplishments include:
  • 1st person in the US to record a sub minute time in Q40 (AMA 422), National record established in 2000.
  • 2005, Tom teamed up with Craig Grunkemeyer to compete in F3D and traveled to France representing the US as members of the US team.
  • Tom also won the Phoenix Classic Twice
  • Tom is a two-time National champion in pylon racing
  • Tom has also set a National record in Super Sport Q500 (AMA 426)
  • Tom has served as the US F3D Team Manager 3-4 different times as well as the team manager for Team Guatemala 3 additional times.
We are amazed to think that one remarkable individual has unselfishly impacted so many people in the model aviation community for so long.

Dan Kane Jr. and Bob Belluomini

On a personal note, I have been extremely blessed to have had the opportunity to be acquainted and friended by so many very special and talented yet incredibly competitive individuals. It would be easy for me to say I have lived my life through the image of my father. His love of modeling started at a very early age as did mine. In the 50’s I remember getting lost in the tall reeds looking for his model. Well, I got lost as I was less than 4’ tall in a reed bank of 6 to7 foot reeds. Crying my eyes out I was finally found to look for the next lost treasure. This was when there were pulse boxes and ground base transmitters and lots of batteries. Mostly single channel.

In the later days general modeling was my passion and was able to turn my modeling skills into a real job working for the makers of “Playdoh”. Through this I found myself enrolled in Industrial design course at the university of Cincinnati studying Product design and Modelmaking. It was a natural for me and I thrived. I worked with many talented designers and found myself starting a model making business of my own known as Scott Models Inc. This is my proudest achievement. This is the 40Th year for me. I sold Scott Models in February 2022. Now retired, I have more time to continue my modeling and racing activities. So many precious friends talented in so many ways, we have been feeding from each other creatively for many years.

The NMPRA is one very special SIG as AMA would call us. The Cliff and Nancy Telford Scholarship Fund is now endowed and will carry on being self-funded. With gratitude I say THANK YOU to the entire membership of the NMPRA and the AMA.

Special thanks goes out to my family Mom and Dad, my kids and my loving and supportive wife Barbara. Not much more to say.

See you at the Races,
