Your latest creation
Re: Your latest creation
Thanks Chago and Dave.
I will test fly it this weekend. (I haven't flown ANYTHING since my last race which was the Tangerine in December.)
Regarding your comments on wing construction, now that you mention it, I guess I remember when Q500s had wood wings, though I wasn't pylon racing back then. I bought a Spickler Quickie 500 that I kinda converted to a Laser (added a turtledeck and canopy and covered it in blue with the yellow starbursts and stars). I called it the "Laser 500." Of course, it had a built-up, wood wing.
Possibly a drawback with my wood wing is maintaining the exact airfoil intended. I believe the Quik-V6 has a little reflex as the TE approaches. With my "slab" TE (1/64th ply sandwiched between two pieces of 3/16 balsa) this may not be as easy to achieve (as with a foam core), but can be sanded in.
Well, we'll see how she goes.

Nice!
Well, I have a lot of time on my hands, I got furloughed on April 8th. We should get called back the first week of June (I hope!). Trying to enjoy the down time and not panic about the situation. Building my tail off. I figure it will be nice to have a wall full of airframes going into next season. Did a new line box as well.

Nice start line box. Nice airplanes. Your shop is neater than mine! I got a motorcycle poster like you too...

I have had the Ashley on the wall for two years, finally framed it up. I am looking for change under the couch cushions to put together a modest paint job this week.
One more Ricochet ready to accept the V-Tail assembly.
Working on the Ricochet wing tool as well.

Yes, I love the classic motorsports tins. Full disclosure, I only take pictures when the shop is clean!
I am also working on an electric 3D plane that has been bouncing around in my head for several years. My goal is to have a Q500, Q40, and aerobatic sport plane of my own design. The aerobatic airplane will be a composite/built up hybrid. The upper half of the fuselage, including the vertical stab will be molded. As will the top of the wing and horizontal stab.
Upper deck plug in work. It will have a 52” wing span and run on 2250 4s packs.

This is what you end up doing with toooo much time on your hands when there is a world wide virus! I bought this Otto Dieffenbach witch kit from Hoosier Cutout Service several years ago. Nothing but 2 large boxes of foam and put it away, I thought for good. I've got a shop full of racing planes and nothing else I wanted to build. Soooooo, 80+hours later, Hillary, the electric power witch was born. I could have built 3 planes with the time this thing took. Will fly it some calm day. Hope you are all well and look forward to racing again. Lloyd

The name seems quite appropriate to me....pastpres wrote:Soooooo, 80+hours later, Hillary, the electric power witch was born.

Re: Your latest creation
A few years ago, Jason Duda asked me if I would finish a Stegal Minnow his dad had started back in the 70’s. The wing, stab and fin/rudder were framed up but that was all. The parts had been stored in the attic in Texas for well over 20 years. The fuse had been crushed as some point. Jason was looking for a remembrance of his dad’s pylon racing history. I said ok but could not give him a completion date. I worked on the Minnow on and off for the past few years eventually getting it to the point of painting. As I ran out of projects recently, I was able to complete the project. Jason wanted a paint job similar to his dads but updated with some new elements. Well it is Done! I have attached a couple of pics as well as a pic of Jason’s family from a pylon race from 1974. The plane has a ST X40 installed with a time period accurate prop from Top Flite! This is a static model as we were concerned with the age of the wing. The number decals are also from the time period!
Re: Your latest creation
Mike - First, thank you for taking on the project and for ressurrecting the model from a hot Texas attic. Outstanding job! I am touched beyond words and it literally brought me tears of joy. As mentioned, this was to be a commemorative piece to my dad who raced with the Chicago Pylon Club from '68 to '76. As life would have it, he started a family and never got around to finishing the racer. A special thanks to Jim Allen who recreated the CPC decal.
My father is certainly smiling from above.
P.S. I hope you're throwing in the prop(wink!).

Re: Your latest creation
Nicely done, Mike! And Jason, that ought to be a treasured memory!
Out of all the places we could be, this is one of them.
Re: Your latest creation
So cool!
I hope I get the chance to see that plane in-person somewhere someday. The pic with Jason and his father and mother really completes the presentation.
Wow simply wow!

Manzano laser-cut fuse kit with my 2nd all-wood, built-up wing. This one has outboard aileron servos. Will maiden at the Cincinnati Moon Shot race.
Built in about 5.5 calandar days, about 50 hrs. For whatever that's worth. A few hours of that time was figuring out how and where to cut the pushrod exits in the bottom sheeting and illustrating for the instructions, so this slowed me down a little.
It's an ounce overweight, but I know why...the wood I used for the wing skins is quite hard and heavy. About 1.5 oz. heavier than my first wing, so in the future I'll be a little more selective with my sheeting.
