Helmets

Hey everybody!! The new racing season is about to get started here in Phoenix and it's time to refresh everyone's memory on a heady topic...helmets. Per the AMA pylon rules:

4.2.1.
Every person going onto the racecourse or between the designated
sideline and the racecourse (see racecourse diagram), and all
officials, whether on or off the course, shall properly wear a helmet
approved by OSHA, DOT, ANSI, SNELL,NOCSAE or other
recognized organization that certifies safety equipment
.

The key is, your helmet MUST be approved by "a recognized organization that certifies safety equipment" AND the appropriate label showing that approval must be on/in the helmet and legible. If it is not, it's time to get another one.

Regarding "bump" caps that have been used by some, and I used to be one of them a few years ago, I have not been able to find ANY of these caps with liners or the liners themselves that are certified by an organization that meets the above rule. Therefore, they are not appropriate and do not meet the requirements of 4.2.1 above from the AMA Pylon Rulebook.

With the first race of the year coming up this weekend, the Winterfest Q500/EF1 race, Those of you coming should please come prepared with an appropriate helmet that meets the requirements of our rules. They will likely be checked. The rule is there for our own safety and we all need to be wearing helmets that are in compliance with it.

Jim,
Do you know if CPSC Bicycle helmets are approved. It's not one you listed but it is a government standard and a recognized organization.

That would appear to comply with the requirements.

If I put my FAA registration number on my helmet, does that cover both? :D :D :D

Dave, it covers your helmet only if you plan on "free flighting" it at some point!

it only has to be registered if there is a transmitter involved. So, if you throw your helmet, you should be ok - but throw your TX, and it better be registered.. :)

Not going to PHX. Wish I could get out of the cold weather for awhile. Next time.

I wasn't aware of this and I will be looking for a new helmet now. I do have a Kevlar shrapnel proof helmet when I was in the AF maybe I should wear it.

My dermatologist whittles on me every Jan. The Dr says I'm getting too much sun.

I'm interested in a wide brim hat but not a cowboy hat. Any ideas?
