Very nice Dave.

What is the thickness of you brace for the V stab?Dave Yost wrote:Well, not as much bling as some of the Q40s In this post - but a project none the less. Ran into an old friend that I had not seen in a while, he runs a machine Carlsbad Airport now, after spraying hundred dollar bills at him for for a few months, I ended up with aluminum tooling for my Ricochet tails.
The airplane should be done in a few days, but here is a sneak peak.....

They are 1/16 birch ply. Tails are coming in at 2.7oz. (Includes hardware). We have 6 flights on the first article, all good. The braces go in with Bob Smith Gold, bonded to the spares on one side, 30 minute epoxy in the other and the final joint. The whole assembly gets glassed into the fuselage. So, the braces are for Alignment and a little insurance.
The decision was made to make a flat tool based on the following:
1. Use of envelope bags reduces cost and time.
2. I can pull more vacuum with ease
3. I can adjust the stab area at the root. The tool was cut over-sized.
4. Cost and complexity vs. ROI.

Well, not a racer, but making good use of down time at home! The Indoor community has started a 1-design "postal" (facebook) contest around this plane, the "Scraps". Pretty easy to make, with minimum weight 0.5g. Some have flown for 6+ minutes in their living room, I am half of that so far!

Re: Your latest creation
Here's my Quik-V6. Well, I call it Quik-V6.5 because it has an all-wood, built-up wing (ribs, spars and sheeting and such). The spar is 1/4" x 1/4" balsa I-beam type with a laser-cut 1/8" balsa spar web that notches into the ribs with 1/8" balsa vertical-grain spar webbing behind that. Also, 1mm x 6mm carbon fiber strips under the top balsa spar and above the bottom balsa spar. Center section sheeted with 1/16" balsa top and bottom. Entire wing sheeted with 3/32". Finally, 3/4 oz. Glass cloth between the two layers of sheeting on the top. Weighs 18.25 oz. covered (clear MonoKote with MonoKote graphics), without servo.
Fuse is the check-build Manzano kit Jim Allen sent me several months ago.
Wing is okay on weight I reckon, just hope it doesn't fold!!! Entire plane RTF weighs 59.25 oz, so it's under.

Re: Your latest creation
I thought the "QV-6.5" logo on the wing was too obtrusive, so I peeled it off and went with checkers on both sides...

Amazing work as usual. Your laser cutting and building skills are worthy of Jedi ranks

Hey! That thing looks Bitchin Tim.
I like the built up wing......some times I think competitive evolution (for lack of a better term) make us forget that one of these things can be built up and flown just the way it all started.
Looks good. Is that clear Ultracote?
Cheers, Dave

Disregard the question, I read the post.

Thanks Chago and Dave.
I will test fly it this weekend. (I haven't flown ANYTHING since my last race which was the Tangerine in December.)
Regarding your comments on wing construction, now that you mention it, I guess I remember when Q500s had wood wings, though I wasn't pylon racing back then. I bought a Spickler Quickie 500 that I kinda converted to a Laser (added a turtledeck and canopy and covered it in blue with the yellow starbursts and stars). I called it the "Laser 500." Of course, it had a built-up, wood wing.
Possibly a drawback with my wood wing is maintaining the exact airfoil intended. I believe the Quik-V6 has a little reflex as the TE approaches. With my "slab" TE (1/64th ply sandwiched between two pieces of 3/16 balsa) this may not be as easy to achieve (as with a foam core), but can be sanded in.
Well, we'll see how she goes.
