Basin Q40 Classic: Remembering Rusty Van Baren along with Clarence and Peggy Lee
Basin Q40 Classic: Remembering Rusty Van Baren along with Clarence and Peggy Lee
Hello Pilots
In an effort to assist the shock of not having a February Q40 race in Phoenix for the first time in over 30 years, the west coast race committee quickly put together a race schedule that will hopefully evolve in the future. First goal on the list was to have a race as close the the Phoenix dates as possible to support the loss of the time slot, so adjust your flights and hotel reservations and lets have a great event. The Basin hosted the 2016 and 2020 Championship Races, so we are capable of running bigger events. Thanks to Dan, Mario, and Robert for their time and effort to get this going quickly. Also, thanks to Jim Allen and all of the Phoenix Club and others who kept the event going for all those years!!

Re: Basin Q40 Classic: Remembering Clarence and Peggy Lee
Maybe next year use the original February date. You just killed Tavares by putting it a week before their race. Now we have to chose which to attend.
In Doug's defence there was nothing posted about a race in Tavares in that time frame. So I apologize if I offended anyone. Organizing a competition is a thankless job and Doug should be commended for his efforts.

And I said, here am I send me.
Re: Basin Q40 Classic: Remembering Clarence and Peggy Lee
If only there was a calendar or something on the NMPRA homepage where clubs could put their traditional race dates? Perhaps list them as "provisional" or something if they aren't 100% set in stone, but at least it lets others know of races near dates they're thinking of.rocket wrote: ↑Fri Jan 13, 2023 9:12 pm Maybe next year use the original February date. Re: Basin Q40 Classic: Remembering Clarence and Peggy Lee
Hi Ray
I did look up the Florida race from 2022 to stay away from that weekend, but the Whittier race has been the same weekend or the following for several years now and I haven't heard of it being a "Race Killer". Unfortunately one of my key players that I depend on to run my event wasn't available on the first weekend of March and the February weather in SoCal isn't the same as AZ, so it becomes risky to host anything other than a local event. I do hope it can work out for both events.
Hope your knees are feeling better!! Take care...

Re: Basin Q40 Classic: Remembering Clarence and Peggy Lee
Great News!!!!!
1.....I took a couple photos yesterday and the field is in the best shape I've ever seen it. All the rain created some grass and the park service came in a mowed it. Besides the mowing, they did quite a bit of clearing in the general area including removing all the homeless camps and such that were creating problems and starting fires, etc. It's really a wow look now and if your on the fence about coming, perhaps this will help you decide.
2.... Other good news, Aero Racing Engines is donating a brand new engine(including a spinner) to one of the attending pilots at the event. We will have a drawing and you can take it with you. I would encourage you to reach out and thank Lee for making this happen along with the Langlois family for their continued support of our hobby.
3... Last thing, continue looking at the 1st post with all the names and teams listed. I'm keeping it updated as I receive information. If you have a star after your name, it means you have provided me the info I asked to pre-register. I've also added teams as I receive that information. We can always make changes leading up to the Friday before the race as needed. Those who have a ? or no star, please email me to confirm you are coming. Also, look for the pilots at the bottom of the list with a star and no team. I'm hoping those pilots can communicate with each other so they can figure out a caller.
I'm really looking forward to this event and hope you are too!!
