May 4th & 5th 2024 OJ Race

Post by vonderhey »

We have not publicized the May 4th & 5th Q-40 contest at our field due to the fact we do not have our FRIA yet. The FRIA was applied for on September 14th 2023 and we still have not received it. All paperwork was completed and was verified to be correct by the AMA and was submitted to the FAA by the AMA. Unfortunately the approval process is a very slow one. The purpose of this post is to give early and fair warning that this contest could possibly be canceled. We will give this process a bit more time before making that dreaded decision.
If this contest does happen, it will be one Q-40 ONLY contest flown over the course of two days. Three plane heats, probably race horse starts. Von Der Hey.

There will not be a contest held at OJ on May 4th & 5th 2024. We still do not have the FRIA for our flying site. According to the AMA the application approval process is now in the FAAs hands which is a government agency. Need I say more? Von Der Hey.

There is a process to request a short-term remote ID exemption for an event outside of a FRIA site. Have you contacted Tyler Dobbs at AMA to see if that will work for you/us? If you haven't, I believe it is worth a try.

The two "Key Items" in this discussion are:

1. AMA's review and approval prior to submission to FAA.
2. Site location   :D

Couldn’t we just put these in our planes and race?

I spoke with our Club president and the LARKS FRIA took about a year to receive!

He also indicated the FAA extended the FRIA deadline to 3/1/24, and given the continued back log will most like extend it again!

The use of a remote ID module is certainly an option. Spectrum also sells a remote ID module; it is a little more expensive than the one at the link Craig provided. Either one would be better than not having the race.

Have the race, don't worry about fria. Private land, line of sight, no drones. Live on the edge.

+1 to Rocket. The FAA has bigger fish to fry. Like door plugs blowing off of Boeing's!

Really! Just have the race. Are you kidding me? So you want us to jeopardize the Langlois family, the flying field, our AMA charter and all parties involved just to have a race? Let me make this PERFECTLY CLEAR, there will be no race in May of 2024! For those of you who want to ignore the AMA rules and the FAA laws should be ashamed of your narcissistic selves. Maybe it would be safer if we did not host future contests at our field in order to insulate the Langlois family regarding potential liability from the people who are more than willing to ignore rules and laws at our expense. Any future banter on this subject will just be nails in the coffin. BTW, I can’t say what I really want to say because if I did I would be thrown off this site. Von Der Hey
