Engine Kill - #6 Phoenix

Post by sahartman21 »

This is the sixth of many short tips on how to finish a composite Q500. They are based upon installation in a "Phoenix" that is currently being produced by Jim Lime (eight zero six - 553-5478).

The pull loop is made by wrapping a couple loops of wire around a 9/64" diameter drill bit.

Bend the loop to allow easy pulling. Extra loops are cut off. Smooth any rough edges with a file.

A piece of Sullivan fuel tubing is routed through the pull wire.

The wire is placed through a piece of antenna tube and then through the hole in the motor mount.

I also drill a 1/4" diameter hole through the firewall as this keeps the wire from bottoming out in the hole. This greatly reduces the likelihood of stripping a servo. :P

Pull the engine kill wire until tubing is pulled into the hole in the engine mount.

Turn on the radio and move the throttle stick to low. The servo arm should point slightly to the rear of the airplane.

Mark the location of the Z-bend on the kill wire.

Bend the wire with Z-bend pliers.

Attach the antenna tube to the side of the fuselage with Blenderm tape (available from Darrol Cady's web site) .

Verify that the pull wire goes in when the throttle goes low and out when the throttle goes to full.

Apply a drop of lightweight oil on the tubing where it goes inside the hole in the motor mount.
