Can this be fixed?

Post by wkevinm »

I have a FAI style glow driver. It went up in smoke a couple years ago and wonder if it is worth repairing. If you have an idea let me know.

See attached picture of area that overheated.

Thanks

Possibly. Might take some pieces of wire to replace burned up traces on the board, though.
Out of all the places we could be, this is one of them.

Thanks
Not sure who made these, it was probably in the paperwork, I already bought a new one, thought I could have a spare, at the same time since I’m in Canada and the cost of mailing stuff across the border usually makes it simpler to throw out if it cannot be fixed easily.

That looks like an old Radio South "Pro-Driver" made by Emerald Coast Circuits located in Americus, GA. Since it's an older unit, it may no longer be supported. Besides making units for Radio South, they make units for Darryl Cady as well. There were two orange case units prior to the current yellow case. The current production Radio South unit has NiMh batteries, and the Darryl Cady unit has a LiFe battery. Emerald Coast Circuits is owned by Charles Merriwether and his email address is charles@merriwether.com I recently acquired a new (NiMh) unit, which I've only used a couple of times. Looks good so far.

Thanks Greg, I may try to fix myself, shipping to and from the US / Canada is unpredictable.

Kevin
It can be fixed.

1) Secure the glow driver VERY GENTLY in a 8" bench vise.
2) Hit it VERY HARD with a 10 lb sledge hammer.

It will be fixed.

Randy! Exactly what I do to planes and projects that I'm not sure of. Makes me sure of.
