Shadel Long Wing Kaze repair 2023

I wanted to share some of my recent build projects leading up to the 100 yr NATS celebration. Dave was gracious enough to give Travis Flynn one of his Jimmy Shinohara built Long wing Kaze models. Dave mentioned that it had some issues from sitting for the last 30+years. The model never had any radio installed and was basically a brand new 30 year old airplane. During the race weekend at the Basin earlier this year several of us inspected the model and made a list of items needing to be addressed prior to running 65% nitro. The following set of pictures show the process I did to address the issues. And I was terrified to dig into this model as it is a one of a kind airplane from one of a kind legends.

The airplane turned out really well. Travis installed the radio on Saturday prior to the Sunday festivities and test flew it Sunday. It flew great! We couldn't get there without the help of Tom Scott, who brought his polishing equipment and fixed some of my blemishes on the stab prior to Sunday. Thank you Tom! Thank you Dave! And Thank you Jimmy!!

one of the highlights of the week was being able to Facetime Dave during one of Travis's demo flights. It was like he was right there with us.

I am humbled by how many and how quickly some of the builders of the past built these incredible models, is truly inspiring.
