Shoestring Aluminum Spar Folding

Post by Marauderer »

Has anyone had a spar bend/fold on their Shoestring or know of one that has?

Everyone I know of has had a problem - at least if using the racing setup.

get a carbon unit from
http://goodwinds.com/3001412.html
and cut to the same length.

Barry,

Goodwinds is a good place and Darrol Cady also sells a replacement spar, ready to run $10 + shipping.

Uavflyer, you know me and I have never had a problem. ;)

But in all seriousness the aluminum is fine. You can switch out the aluminum for the carbon for some weight savings and additional piece of mind. The carbon is cheap on comparison to everything else.

The original prototype shoestring from horizon is still flying with the stock aluminum spar on a racing setup. Almost 4 years and no issues.

Well-- maybe I'm a little too heavy on the Elev.

Seriously, I and my partners have had about 5 of the Shoestrings and they all bent, at least those that were flown before the tube was replaced. I have also heard of others.

I have never, however, heard of one folding!

I noticed it on my Shoe when I was pre-flighting and saw that I had some extra Dihedral.

One of us used a wood dowel fit and glued inside the aluminum tube (I've heard this is common on the big birds) and had no further problems- but he still replaced it with carbon later. it's really a cheap upgrade, no matter who you get it from, and does save about 1Oz.

Thanks Guys for all the input. Not being as smooth as DK and having been known to do hi speed aerobatics during a heat it would probably not hurt to get the CF spars. :o

Yep, Darrol doesn't list them on his web site but he has them. Thanks Trey and all.

Does the stock Shoestring still have those idiotic spring clips(originally illegal) to hold the wing to the fuselage resulting in a loose wing?. I threw those away and added two blind nuts to each root rib. This set up screwed the wings tight against the fuselage sides thus preventing the tube from bending, as mine has never done.

Get rid of the spring clips. Install blind nuts to the wing root ribs. The screws will pull the wing tight to the fuselage.

Go to RC Groups Page 51, report 762. I posted pictures of the screw installation.

I tried attaching the pictures here but apparantly the file is too large.

I have been using the Hyperion DS09-SCD. A great little servo that meets the recommended minimum torque of 30 oz-in. Great price too at $28.00. Double ball bearing, digital. I have been using them in my Miss Dara, no problems.

I'm putting one together now (a Shoestring) and used A7020 thin digital wing servos (Spektrum) for the ailerons, and A5030 mini-digitals for the rudder / elevator. The 5030's are pretty inexpensive, to boot.

My Pogo used JR Sport MN48's on the rudder, elevator, and ailerons. So far no issues with that one.

HS225's are used in a Wagner Solution I have, they're fairly small and up to the task.

What do you have laying around from "way back when?"
Out of all the places we could be, this is one of them.

Yea..... I can see the problem with the wing/half's not holding tight to the fuselage and, a hold down at the rear of the canopy broke-off already, Cowling not fitting all the way, More epoxy on motor mount framing area.
But...Hey for $150 bucks Not bad and, all ARF's need some work here and there. 8)
