2018 Warbird National race

Postby mflood3800 » Sat Jan 13, 2018 12:21 am

Hey racers,
Many of you know we (Warbird) wont be back at the Nats in Muncie this year (2018).
It is not because of anything other than time, distance and participation.

The week of pylon is awesome. I have been there the last 2 years and am so glad I was able to experience Muncie.
But n matter where slotted the Warbird event, at the end or the beginning, it put a lot of strain on racers vaca time, and hotel expense etc. With 2 days already in 426 and another 2 days in 422 plus EF1 or 424, it was just too long to be in Muncie.

Second reason we are not going there in 2018 is the travel distance for those who are Warbird focused. With most of our racers being West Coast- that is a long way to go. We were so thankful the AMA allowed us 2 days to race to help validate the trip for those who only came out for the Warbird event.

Thirdly is the participation numbers. I personally feel are directly related to the first 2 reasons.

With all this said, we want to continue Warbirds on a specisl National level.
So we are looking at an Oct Race in Sacramento, Ca.
Polling numbers indicate between 60-80 entries are doable.

This race will still use the basic rules from the Nats with the only difference being what criteria is used in case of a tie breaker and the omission of the trophy races. All awards will be determined by total points thru every heat.

We are again joined by YS Engines, APC props for this event. We have already accumulated other great sponsors and look forward to super National level event, sanctioned by the AMA.

More info will be posted as it becomes finalized.
I just felt we needed to get some info out there.

The Warbird National event is not dead, it is just moving.
Though this wont be an official Nats event, it will still be a National event drawing pilots from across the country as well as the globe
Stay tuned ......

Edit*

It is looking like the 2018 Warbird Nationals will be held in Sacramento, Ca.
The SAMS club hosts several warbird races a year and does a great job.

Entry info will be announced soon. Rules will be very similar to the Nats set up raced in 2016 and 2017.
If your plane was legal in Muncie, it will be legal at the Warbird Nationals.
Only a slight change to race procedure will be seen.
Same course, same classes, same break outs etc.

There more financial sponsors this year and we expect a huge turn out and great prizes.
If you can only make one West Coast event then plan on this one.

More info to come.......

Alright I received the green light on the dates and other info for the 2018 Warbird Nationals

Date Oct 19,20,21
- it will be a 3 day race for the following purpose.
-The Bronze class will be raced exclusively on Fri Oct 19
- it will be the only class raced on this day
Practice for other classes will open after the bronze class awards ceremony concludes

Then on Sat(20) and Sun(21) the Silver and Gold classes will be run both days.

This allows us to place no limit on total entries and maximize the amount of racing each day.
It also allows pilots to enter every class - bronze, silver and gold, should they prefer.

The Location will be in Sacramento , Ca at the SAMS RC Site on Florin Road.
Here is a link with all the info you will need:
http://www.sacramentoareamodelers.com/w ... onals.html

Food, Dry camping will be provided.
There is an awesome covered pit area with power for the planes maintenance etc, not for RV or campers.

We are expecting close to 100 entries now that the bronze class is open to every one and on its own day.
We would suggest bringing canopy and table as the pit area will not be able to handle the amount of pilots expected to participate.

We will have electronic registration for your convenience and entry fees must be paid by 8:00 AM of the day you race.
This will be an AMA Sanctioned event so all safety and guideline rules apply.

The major difference in the AMA Nats and the new Warbird Nationals will be as follows:
All points are tallied for the heat races based on finish position (same as Nats) BUT:
The top 4 point finishers of each class race in the A Main, the next 4 points finishers race in the B Main and so on down to C & D Mains Etc....

The finish position of these "Main" heats, whether it's the A,B,C main etc, will also be added to your total points for the event.
So even though you don't make the A Main, but finish 1st in the B main, you could still win the Event, if all 4 racers of that A Main break out, mid air etc..

Tie breaker criteria will be different. At the Nats it was fastest legal time.
At The New Warbird Nationals, it will be many criteria such as Break Outs, cuts, Black flags, DNS,Fastest legal time, etc.
This requires a clean race from start to finish thru out the entire event.

The last difference will be the omission of using lane assignments and wing colors.
You will not use wing colors which allows you to race in different lanes thru out the event.

There are no Lipo batteries allowed in the planes due to fire restrictions. How ever life batteries are ok.

The rest of the rules are the same as the AMA Nats for 2016 and 2017.
