Judgeman Hardware Improvements

Post by HankKauffmann »

Hi guys,

Things you may wish to do to improve your Judgeman system.

First thing ... the switches that were supplied with some of the earlier systems proved to be problematic. We are now using part number GTS447A101HR available through Digikey and Mouser.

Secondly, the system will work better with metal at the antenna attachment point. For the NMPRA system, we added aluminum foil (like the furnace repair tape) going out 2 inches from the antenna attachment point, and added a trimmed down fender washer. (Through the magic of RF, you don't need metal-metal contact between the tape and the washer.)

We also tested 5DBi high gain antennas, and did find that these too helped. Some guys are also using extremely directional antennas, but be careful as most stations 'talk' to the starter, but pylon 1 judges 'talk' to pylon 1 lights.

The antenna like prominent locations, ours are at least 4ft or more for each end of the longest runs. As always, the modems require line of sight, so stay aware of the sight lines and keep metal and water out of the way. Typical problems are caused by vehicles, chain link fencing, people's bodies, coolers, and water bottles.
