Judgeman system antennae

Post by Triggo »

Hi everyone,
My name is Bob Triggs. I'm a member of NEPRO with the Judgeman responsibility. The first year with judgeman I had no problems. Then the following year(last year) I had problems. I think the problems came down to three bad antennae I had mixed in my set. I changed jobs last year to RFS(radio frequency systems) where they build cell phone antennae for towers. 4 months after I started working there I relized I could test the judgeman system antennae at work. DUHHH!! Any ways here are the results and some suggestions.

I believe I’ve tested almost everyone’s antennae for the Judgeman system (NEPRO, SEMPRA, CAPS). Below you will see the 4 main types tested below. NEPRO is the only one that had some broken(dead) antennae. SEMPRA and CAPS some out of tune, but I believe SEMPRA should stop using the short #1 antennae because they only have a 2-3 dBI gain.
All the antenna have a RP-SMA connector for future purchasing info.

1. Shorty rubber duck antenna
a. Size 4 inches
b. 2-3 dBi gain
c. Tuning on these are all over the place some bad some really good
d. Cost about $7

2. Regular rubber duck antenna
a. Size 8 inches
b. 5 dBI gain
c. Tuning is better on these than the shorty #1 but still not the best
d. Cost $11.5

3. Giant rubber duck antenna
a. Size 15 inches
b. 9 dBI gain
c. Tuning is about the same as the regular size #2
d. Cost $23

4. Open style magnetic mount remote antenna
a. Size 10 inches
b. 7 dBI gain
c. Tuning on this antenna is extremely good with a very WIDE band
d. Cost $17.6

Recommendations
-Do not use the #1 shorty antenna, only in perfect conditions will this work well
-Take care of your antennae, store in padded box etc.
-label the location where they go and use them at the same location consistently
-do not put bungee cords, straps, whatever pulling against over or rub against the antenna just touching them affects their tuning and range
-do not place antennae behind fences or cages(direct line of site is the best)
-#4 antenna is the best overall performer, but is a stationary antenna
-use a mix of these antenna for the course
-have spares
-Purchase your antenna through http://www.L-com.com remember RP-SMA connectors

Use #4 antenna at:
Main computer
Starters position

Use #3 antenna at: If you have problems use #4 at problem location remember it needs some kind of mount for magnet to attach to (stick in the ground with washer on it)
Pylon 1 display
Pylon 1 judges
Timers position
Audience display 1
Audience display 2

Use #2 antenna at: these two boxes are generally held in your lap so I recommend the smaller antenna unless you have problems
Pylon 2 cut judge
Pylon 3 cut judge
