Airframes available for 424

Post by julio »

Hello friends. Now that the great planes Viper and Quick V6 have been discontinued. What other wood airplanes are they as options are in the market?

Thanks for your response

Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Here are a couple off the top of my head. They are not arf's though. As I recall it can be the same fuse as a 426 plane but the wing must either be all wood or a foam core.

Not much out there right now. There might be more and someone else can chime in.

StegallHobbies.com has the Smasher in a fiberglass fuselage for $100. With the tail wood and the foam core for the wing, the price is $125. With the tail wood and a sheeted foam core wing it is $175. These prices do not include shipping which is billed on the shipping day and is actual cost plus 10%.

Attached are some photos.

You can see more at:

Building the Smasher - The Molded Composite

Building the Smasher - Wood Tail Version

Building The Martin - Conventional Wood Tail Version of the Smasher

We're sold out of fuselages right now, but will have more in 2-3 weeks.

When the new StegallHobbies.com web site is published, it has full details on the plane. I hope to have it online by May 1st, but we are extremely busy and I have four Smashers to build and deliver over the next month.

The Smasher uses a NACA 66-012 airfoil. Same as the Vortex and many others including the Seeker, the HurriKane, the CandyKane, and a number of others. the firewall, wing saddle and stab saddle are perfectly 0-0-0 and building the wood V-tail takes some work is you make it bolt on, but you can just do a simple V-tail and with the stab saddle cut out properly, alignment is extremely easy.

I have one CandyKane by Matney Models in stock and it is the same prices as the Smasher listed above.

I forgot a couple of Smasher options on completion level.

A built and glassed wood bolt on V-tail is $75.

Though not legal for 424 right now, a composite bolt on V-tail is $75.

I charge $75 to complete a sheeted foam core wing to be ready for covering. If you want it glassed with .7 ounce cloth and epoxy, that is $25.

A ready to paint and cover Smasher is $300.

To have it painted one color with System Three LPU Polyurethane is $50

To have it painted one color with Klass Kote epoxy paint is $75

Shipping is actual shipping cost plus 10%.

I'm in high gear, but there is a lead time of 2-3 weeks. Right now, I'm booked through the middle of May.

The Intimidator and Vortex are both laser cut wood kits that build straight forward, fly amazing and capable of winning any 424 or 426 race

If you are not dead set on wood, the V-Gun from Big Bruce Racing and The R-200 from Randy Etken (if he is still making them) are also great flying planes and use the same wing airfoil as the Vortex and Intimidator. Also, If you can cut or find someone to cut cores to fit a Ninja, it is another really competitive quickee that would work well in 424. The prepainted composite bodies and tails may cost a bit more up front, but can be ready to fly in one night. Unless you love building, the cost is probably pretty close once you add up the building and finishing materials (not to mention the hours involved).

Hopefully, someone comes up with another readily available ARF to fill the void, but guessing it would have to be a private venture as there is just not enough interest in racing to satisfy the larger distributors

I accidentally let Quickie500.com get cancelled and it got snapped up.

But you can go to http://quickie500.azurewebsites.net/ for plans for some of the older Quickie 500 planes

I also have a Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Quickie-500-172201610278079/ and I will be updating the web site above with a newer site design and the facebook page with a new title.

The pages at http://rcpylonsuppliers.com/vendors and https://www.facebook.com/RCPylonSuppliers/ have a lot of vendor links and I will be adding a Quickie 500 section on the RC Pylon Suppliers page as so much has changed over the past few years.

If you have Quickie 500 stuff to sell, let me know and I will add it to the listings. This is a free service.

Hollow molded tails have been legal for 424 since 1/1/2017.
Check the rules and look at the change history.

Interesting, when I try to go to the site for the R200/R140 "q500racing.com" I get an error. The wood wing for the R140 along with an R200 fuse and tail would be a good way to get a 424 plane up and going. the wing takes a little work but they have a lot of the hard stuff already done.
