Hello Race Fans!
This email report was sent out 2 days ago, but for some reason doesn't seem to have been received, and I don't know why. So here it is again with no photo this time.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This report is coming to you from the Drachten airstrip in Holland (Netherlands). Your reporter is here in attendance as the Assistant Team Manager for the 2023 USA Pylon Racing Team. What am I doing here? Well with Team Canada taking a pass, I was asked by USA Team Manager Will Naemura to come & help out. The USA has one of the largest teams with three F3D (6.5cc gas powered), three F3E (electric powered) and one Junior F3D pilot. It's a big job to look after two different teams (Gas & Electric ) at the same contest. I've also been asked to write the daily "color commentary" reports much like what I've done for the previous two World Championships. My laptop has been experiencing trouble with downloading photos, so I sure hope I can get this resolved by race time.
The opening ceremony took place this morning ay 0900 outside in the pouring rain... Fortunately, the speeches were kept short! The only guy with proper footwear was Matt Fehling from Florida who wore flip flops. (He's very familiar with rain squalls).
As this first report is a test of my computer and correct email addresses, it will be brief. For a start, below is the championships schedule (now missing) . The weather report is looking grim with intermittent rain the whole week. I'm calling for F3E pilot Otto Dieffenbach and we were the only electric fliers to get is flights yesterday. Otto (being a full scale pilot) is a master of reading the rain fronts and established our presence by getting in 5 test flights in between the rain, hail & lightning. We had the F3E course to ourselves, as no one else would venture out into the wet conditions.
I just ordered a rain coat from Amazon and their one day delivery service is simply amazing. SOoo Wednesday... let the games begin!
Official practice starts today but was delayed by rain. It briefly abated & the Japanese Team went out first. It's 11:00 & a pounding rain squall now. It's hard sometimes to even hear each other inside the big tent. I expect the teams out testing will return like drown rats...poor guys, UGH! Yet we persist, because the show must go on.
Anybody wanting to be added to this list, please drop me a line. My address book shows up to 3 email addresses for some of you, so I've made a 'best guess' as to which one to use.
If you do not wish to receive these email reports, please let me know and I'll remove your name from the list.
Cheers,
Paul Assistant Team Manager , Team USA

Post from Facebook:
Good Morning Race Fans!
This is the day we've all been anxiously waiting for. Today is official racing day #1, where the rubber meets the road (or air) as the case may be. Just a few teams left to practice (leftover from yesterday) due to the rain stoppage, and the World Championships will be underway. For reference, the world FAI F3D record set in 2015 is held by Randy Bridge of the USA at 55:32 for 10 laps on the (4 kilometer course). There is no current electric record yet, but it's safe to say the electric models are arguably as fast as the gas models at 330 kph / (205 mph). Being much smaller in size, the electric F3E models are harder to see than their larger gas F3D counterparts.
Yesterday's technical inspection & processing officials sent a lot of competitors back to their tables for redoing their competition numbers and such. A thick felt pen helped Otto sneak through as his 1 inch FAI licence numbers were found to be 1 mm (.040") undersize. They check everything at this level! A number of fuel shut offs failed testing too. The officials were patient but often would send you back to the end of the queue to get re-checked. The last checking stations issued individual pilots a Dutch Civil Aviation Authority (drone) registration sticker. It is safe to say Team USA is now very familiar with the extensive markings required. All those nice AMA numbers on our planes are of no use here.
We are not allowed to do any flying or even engine running before 0900. Two days ago, some early flying electric racers from Australia attracted the attention of the local police for violating the local noise ordinance. Any F3E flier running a single blade prop knows how loud they are. It's hard to believe how much noise those props generate until you actually hear one! Whereas, the gear reduced drive larger folding props are very quiet as you would expect from an electric plane. Other than a few APC nylon props in electric, the vast majority of racers use all custom molded carbon fiber props.
So my question today to you all is: 1. What was this prop designer thinking? 2. Will it make the podium? ( Hint: Design comes from the land down under...) Bonus points for anybody identifying those legs...

From Facebook:
Welcome back race fans!
A bit of a recap from yesterday. With all the rain only 2 rounds of F3E and 1 round of F3D were flown & we're behind schedule. Our F3D team was well poised with 1-2-3-4 & 6th place.
Even so, many were not happy with their times. They'll be happy with world record times I guess. They are doing lots of engine run-ups though.
In F3E, although Trey & Bruce were getting in times, they weren't satisfied. Otto is having a hard time with 2 cuts & then he ran out of battery for a DNF. Not at all where he expected to be.
Others did worse with a South African pilot crashing past pylon #1 in F3E.
This morning turned out bright & sunny with a new start line score board in place & we're all happy. Otto's 3rd flight although slow, was a clean 10 lap race with just enough battery for 10 - 1/4 laps.
Bruce Brown flew a nice clean race & Trey Witte registered his first cut.
A mid air in F3D wiped out young W/C Emil Broberg who now has two 200 scores. The Dutch web site score board is available at this link below which tells all. Look under Scheme & results.

WELCOME BACK RACE FANS! It's Thursday @ 14:00 hrs. With good weather today, there is a flurry of activity all over. The organizers are just pushing hard to get the maximum number of rounds in possible. It was found that the scoring system was 1 sec. short on lane two and 2 sec. short on lane three. This caused a number of scores to be adjusted for the better.Still the word champs "GREMLINS" are lurking everywhere with top fliers (and many others) losing flights with technical difficulties that didn't show up in practice.Otto & I just sqeaked in the last flight of F3E in round 5 and ran back to the tent as the rains came down. All those F3D models are outside on deck getting rained on.As of 1500 we have in 5 rounds of F3E & 4 rounds of F3D. Everyone is cueing up at the lunch counter for hot soup which is just the ticket for now. This rain squall is brief and on we go.Below is a link to the individual rankings as of 16:00. These current rankings are very volitile as you will see towards the end of the racing.
The wind is noticeably getting stronger towards the end & giving the pilots trouble both with flying and landings. Both Leonas & father Andreas Keiser from Germany each lost an F3D model.
Daniel Arapakas from Australia lost an F3D model, a Swedish model was lost and I believe there is still one South African Fuselage stilll MIA in the trees....

Good Morning Race Fans!
It'a a wonderful clear morning at the Drachten airstrip here in Holland. With excellent calm weather we were able to get going sharply at 0900. With the organizer & attendees giving a Happy Birthday song to Otto & Trey, it was a great start to the day.
First rounds are looking very good for Team USA with the entire electric team all posting personal best times so far. AJ in F3D is looking hot posting his second 58 second heat. Many of the other teams are also posting fast scores as well.
I think it's safe to say all the competitiors are elated with this mornings good weather. Paul
