Just a quick update: As of today, we have "penciled in" 10 entries for AMA 424 on Saturday morning, 20 for AMA 426 on Saturday after 424, and 19 for AMA 422 (Q40) on Sunday. The weather forecast looks good. If you were on the bubble and can make it after all, please let us know as soon as you can and join the test flying/head games portion of the program on Thursday or Friday. I will have my "happy tach" available to anyone who wants to show off their incredible ground rpm before the actual competition begins. :D

Many thanks to Lonnie Finch, Roger Burright, Craig Farthing, Vernelle Tallman, and our many veteran racecourse officials/supporters for pitching in to make this event happen again this year. See you in a few days!

Cheers,
Duane Gall

The Heartland Speed Freakz’ 2024 Spring Pylon Race kicked off our racing season in style over a sunny & breezy Mothers’ Day weekend at lovely Lake Afton. Many thanks to the Wichita R/C Club (WRCC) for the use of their first-class facility, to Sedgwick County and Lake Afton Park staff for extra mowing and maintenance ahead of time, and (as always) to Vernelle Tallman, Roger Burright, Lonnie Finch, Craig Farthing, Amy Scherrer, and the dedicated WRCC racecourse officials who make it all go so smoothly, we tend to forget what a challenge it can be. Thanks also to our generous sponsors, Jett Engineering and APC Props, for their financial support.

Last year, we had unseasonably warm temperatures to contend with; this year, it was the threat of rain. All during practice on Thursday and Friday, pilots spent as much time on their cell phones watching the weather apps as they did staring at the tachometer or tweaking their control-surface throws. In the end, we were blessed with a sunny day on Saturday and only a brief rain delay on Sunday morning. After a full 5 rounds in all 3 events, we finished up by 2:00 on Sunday before the big storms rolled in.

AMA 424 on Saturday morning provided a good test of the new rules allowing mixed electric and glow power systems. Among the 7 entries, Jim Allen and Vic Kirkpatrick used electric while the others used glow. (Some of the glow entries were truly old-school, including Scat Cats fielded by Mark and Neil Martin and a Doddger fielded by Eddie Jump. If you aren’t familiar with those designs, you are probably under 50 and definitely don’t need to worry that you’re missing out!) Jim Allen graciously stepped aside from the winner’s circle when it became apparent that his electric setup was more than equal to the task. Vic, with his basically box-stock Viper and EF1 electric powertrain, turned out to be exactly on par with the glow models and he placed third. First and second were Mark Martin and Craig Farthing, respectively, with best times within a second of each other. Craig used the Jett 424 conversion while Mark used an Evolution .46.

AMA 426 ran smoothly for the rest of the day Saturday, with 21 contestants duking it out right to the end. There were only a couple of crashes, of which the loudest was a folded wing by Yours Truly in the very last heat. Hard to believe, but my venerable old Bird of Prey (a/k/a the Green Beast) just pulled one too many G’s trying to keep up with Mark Martin and Jim Allen. Fortunately, the echoes from that blast drowned out the sound of their gleeful chuckling as they rounded the last turn just moments apart. Top finishers for the day were Rich Beers 1stwith a best time of 1:03.59, Matt Fehling 2nd & Fast Time with a 1:00.74, and Dub Jett 3rd with a 1:01.86.

Sunday dawned gloomy and dank, with storm cells sullenly shuffling past us with menacing glances. But they didn’t actually unload on us, so after a brief halt in test flying, the first heat of Quarter 40 took off at about 9:45 am and the action continued steadily until 2:00, when a 3-way tie for first was decided by a flyoff among Scott Hartman, Richard Oliver, and Jim Allen. Jim came out on top of that one. Jim and Richard’s best times were both stellar, 1:00.39 and 1:00.53 respectively, but Matt Fehling edged them both out for Fast Time with a smokin’ 1:00.13.

Significantly, Q40 featured only a couple of minor takeoff mishaps but NO CRASHES! That’s right, an entire day of Q40 without crashes! 16 contestants made it to the last round and all will be ready again by next time.

The wind began to freshen after 1:30, but by then the day was nearly done. After a brief awards ceremony, everyone got packed up before the rains came back. Eddie Jump took home the door prize, a new AMA 426 engine provided by Jett Engineering.

Again, many thanks to our experienced crew and sponsors. We look forward to seeing everyone at Lake Afton again this fall for the Mike Tallman Legacy Q40 Race.
