Lee Von Der Hey began his modeling career in Pennsylvania during the early 1960s. Like many others, he started by building free flight and control-line
models before progressing to radio-controlled (RC) aircraft. In the early 1970s, Lee met Dave Latsha, a member of the NMPRA Hall of Fame, at a model field. After
watching Dave fly a Formula 1, Lee became hooked on the sport, and Dave became his mentor.
Since then, Lee has been a regular participant in the pylon racing community. He has won numerous contests across various categories, often showcasing his own
design aircraft. Lee has received many Fast Time awards and Best of Show trophies, making him a consistent contender for top honors. Additionally, he has served
as Contest Director for over 40 events.
What sets Lee apart from the crowd is his skill with engines. He is detail-oriented and a perfectionist, with a strong understanding of what it takes to make them
consistently fast.
After retiring from the film and TV industry in Los Angeles in 2021, Lee moved his family to Greensboro, NC. Once they were settled, Mike Langlois, a member of the
NMPRA Hall of Fame, invited Lee to assist him in running Aero Racing Engines, where they build Nelson .40 racing engines.
Lee had really wanted to retire and focus on building models and racing. However, when he learned that Mike was ill and that the Nelson engine line could be at risk
of shutting down, he reconsidered his plans. Lee decided to accept the challenge, motivated by two main reasons: first, to help Mike, and second, to support the
pylon community. With Lee's assistance, they were able to produce more consistent engines while enhancing both performance and availability.
Lee continued building Nelson engines at the Aero Racing Engine facility from 2022 until his retirement in 2024.
Many people are unaware that Lee has been exceptionally generous to racers over the years, donating his time, money, and materials to help race organizers and new
racers improve their skills.
